'Mr Warrington' embarks on new political chapter

'Mr Warrington' embarks on new political chapter

Orbit News owner and publisher of Warrington Worldwide, Gary Skentelbery, has been appointed to Appleton Parish Council and has vowed to champion the priorities of local people.

Gary – known locally as “Mr Warrington” and standing as an independent candidate - was co-opted from a shortlist of seven candidates following the resignation of two previous councillors. He will represent the Thorn Ward.

The news comes as Orbit News celebrates 50 years championing the priorities of industry and local communities across the town.

“Having been a Warrington journalist for many years, I have been involved in reporting on many local issues and priorities across the town,” said Gary following his appointment. “As a local parish councillor it’s my job to champion the priorities of the residents of Thorn Ward and the wider Appleton community, and that’s exactly what I intend to do.

“I’m honoured and delighted to have been chosen for this position on parish council. Over the coming weeks I intend to go out and to speak to as many people as possible – residents and businesses – to understand what’s really important to them.

“We have some incredibly important issues to deal with - including new housing developments, increasing demands on our green belt and road traffic pressures – but we also need to focus on the simple things too, like ensuring our street lights are working, our communities are clean, potholes are fixed, and people feel safe and secure.”

Gary will spend the next few weeks and months meeting local people and businesses, alongside making and breaking news across the town.

“I’m an independent councillor with no political affiliations and that’s important in the job I do. But – whether as a journalist or a parish councillor - I’m keen to ensure I’m working alongside anyone and everyone who is working in the interests of our town. People can rest assured, I will do my very best to represent our great and historic village, whilst also promoting and campaigning for my home town."

Gary was co-opted onto the council alongside local resident Gerry Palmer, who is also an independent and they plan to work together as a team, tackling local issues.

In 2018, Orbit News celebrates its 50th year in business and will be giving back through a range of events and activities to support for young people and businesses in the town.
