A police officer taking part in the Tower to Tower cycle fundraising challenge in September for leading Lancashire carers' charity Blackpool Carers Centre is urging families to spoil their mums in a unique setting by taking them to afternoon tea at Beaverbrooks House on Newton Drive on Sunday.

Forget breakfast at Tiffanys - what could a more unique setting than afternoon tea at Beaverbrooks House, the gem of a building donated to Blackpool Carers Centre at a peppercorn rent by Beaverbrooks Charitable Trust?

Oliver Maughan has organised two sittings, at 11.30am and 2pm, for afternoon teas provided by Sue Seddon and staff at Layton based Sue’s Curiositeas & Coffee Shop which has just been shortlisted for a Radio Wave Café Culture award.  The shop itself has a great community conscious ethos with pay it forward 'pending' schemes allowing customers to donate change or the price of a meal for someone in need.

Oliver is hosting the teas at £9.95 adults, £5.95 children under 10, at the house that Laurence Llewelyn Bowen redesigned, and BBC DIY SOS volunteer contractors rebuilt as the home of the carers’ charity in the summer of 2016 as the Big Build for Children in Need. Even on the dullest day the sunny features within lift the spirits.

“We don’t normally work on Sundays, but this is such a special event at the carers’ centre and we’re looking forward to seeing what the facilities are like there,” said Sue.

Oliver hopes for 80 covers on the day.  He’s already well past the halfway stage of his £2000 cycle challenge in fundraising, via his Just Giving page, but the afternoon tea bookings could push him across the finish line in advance of the event.

It's a great chance to see what's changed within Beaverbrooks House since the TV cameras moved out having moved millions to tears - and to explore the beautiful gardens that arose from the tangle of undergrowth too.

Oliver, who lives in Preston but works in Blackpool, recently recruited police cadets for a 24-hour spin challenge at Tesco, Marton, Blackpool. He explains: “When I first heard about the Tower to Tower cycle challenge I thought it would be a fantastic personal journey to go on but now I have met the team at Blackpool Carers Centre and learned so much about the work they do I’ve become even more determined to raise as much as possible. The centre is an incredible charity who do so much for a largely hidden part of society.”

He recommends the 500-mile cycle challenge from Blackpool Tower to Eiffel Tower from September 23 to 28, with three days cycling in Britain and two in France, as a great way of burning off the calories too…  there are still a handful of places available on the epic challenge. Call Terry Hodkinson at the centre to sign up.  It's going to be a Tour de Force!

PS don't forget the clocks go forward on Sunday March 31 too so if you forget to give mum breakfast in bed, make up for it here!
