Tesco Helps Hull's Bee Lady Towards £95,000 Charity Target

Tesco stores across Hull were a hive of activity as customers and colleagues helped Hull's Bee Lady raise money for Age UK.

Jean Bishop, who is famous for the bright yellow and black costume that she wears to collect money for the charity, popped into the Tesco Extra store to join the fundraising festivities.

The fun day activities took place in Tesco stores throughout the city but the Tesco Extra store at St Stephen’s Centre was buzzing with fun activities.

Store colleagues dressed up as bees, there was a selfie mirror, a craft workshop and face painters. All the store’s customers were given bee bopper to wear on their heads and there was also a guest appearance from Jean herself.

Money raised went to Age UK, which has set a target of collecting £95,000 this year to celebrate Jean’s 95th birthday.

Store manager of Tesco Extra in Hull at St Stephen’s Centre, Nick Carolan, said: “Jean is known throughout Hull as The Bee Lady and does a fantastic job raising money for Age UK.

“Whilst we are dedicated and focused on serving our customers and enhancing their shopping experience in our stores across Hull, we are also keen to engage with and help to support our local community and so we were delighted to hold the bee fun day and raise money for such a good cause.”

Jean got involved with a knitting class at her local Age UK after the death of her husband and started shaking her collection tin three years later and is now close to completing over 25 years of fundraising.
